A very simple way is to layer in textured soft furnishings: cushions, throws, curtains and rugs. If everything in the room is flat and smooth – straight sofa, plain walls, shiny floor – adding materials with visible weave, knit or pattern instantly makes the space feel richer and more interesting.
Think chunky knitted throws, linen or cotton cushion covers with subtle embroidery, a jute or wool rug, or curtains with a soft, slubby texture instead of perfectly flat polyester. You’re not necessarily adding more colour; you’re adding depth through touch.
You can also mix in a natural material or two, like a rattan basket, a wooden tray, or a ceramic vase with a matte finish. These small pieces break up the uniformity of plastic, glass and metal.
Texture is what makes a room feel cosy in photos and in real life. And the nice thing is, you can build it slowly without changing your main furniture at all.
