How can you tell if your home’s water pressure is set too high?

Published on:

There are a few everyday signs that your water pressure might be higher than it should be. If taps and showers blast water out aggressively even when only half open, that’s one clue. Frequently banging or rattling pipes (water hammer), noisy plumbing when you turn things on or off, or sudden bursts from flexible hoses can also signal high pressure.

Appliances like washing machines or dishwashers might develop leaks or wear out hoses faster than expected. Toilet fill valves may fail more often. Sometimes you’ll notice splashing in basins and sinks that’s hard to control.

For a clear answer, you can use a simple pressure gauge attached to an outdoor tap or hire a plumber to check. Many homes are comfortable in a certain pressure range; if readings are consistently above that, a pressure-reducing valve may be needed.

High pressure feels nice in the shower but quietly stresses pipes, joints and appliances all day. Catching and correcting it early prevents random leaks and long-term damage.
