Sloppy work often shows as odd patches, mismatched colours, or messy sealant blobs. Around chimneys or vents, flashing should lie neatly and firmly, not sticking up or peeling away.

Talking to neighbours or the previous owner can also help. If they mention repeated leaks in the same spot, that suggests the underlying issue was never really solved.

For real peace of mind, especially when buying a home, hiring a roofer or inspector to review the roof is worth it. They’ll see things the average eye can’t, like soft spots, incorrect layering, or shortcut repairs.
