Does having a dog always improve home security?

Published on:

A dog can help with security, but it’s not a magic solution in every case. Some breeds are naturally alert and will bark at unusual sounds or strangers near the door. That alone can deter casual intruders who prefer quiet, easy targets. Even a small dog with a big voice can make someone think twice.

However, not every dog is a guard dog. Many pets are friendly to everyone, including strangers, or they may be shy and hide instead of reacting. Relying entirely on a dog for security is risky. They also need care, time, training, and aren’t a “device” you can switch on and off.

Good locks, sensible lighting, secure doors and windows, and basic security habits are still essential. If you already love dogs and want one as part of the family, the extra alertness they bring is a bonus. But getting a dog only for security, without considering the responsibilities, usually isn’t fair to the animal or effective for safety.
