Should you prioritise being close to public transport when choosing a home?

For many people, being close to public transport is a huge practical advantage, especially in busy cities. A home within walking distance of a reliable bus stop, metro station or train line can save you hours of commuting each week and reduce dependence on cars or ride-hailing.

It also affects long-term value. Areas connected well by public transport tend to stay attractive to renters and buyers, even as patterns change. If you ever need to rent out or sell the property, “near station” or “near metro” is a strong point in your favour.

Of course, you need to balance this with noise and crowd levels. Being directly above a very loud main road or station entrance might feel too hectic. Sometimes living a short, quiet walk away – not right on top of the transport hub – is ideal.

So, if you use or plan to use public transport regularly, give this factor serious weight. It’s not glamorous like a fancy kitchen, but it shapes your everyday life in a big way.
