How often should you clean the inside of wardrobes or closets?

Published on:

Inside wardrobes and closets, dust builds quietly, especially on shelves and along the floor where shoes and bags live. A practical schedule is to do a light tidy every 3 months and a deeper clean every 6–12 months.

Light tidy means: take out the most-used items, shake or fold them, wipe visible shelves with a dry or slightly damp cloth, and vacuum the floor area. A deeper clean means emptying one section completely, wiping walls, shelves and hanging rods, and checking for any dampness or musty smell.

Clothes, especially rarely worn ones, can trap moisture and odours. If you never empty the wardrobe, things can start to smell “stale” even when they’re technically clean. Regular cleaning also gives you a chance to notice insect damage, mould, or items you no longer use.

You don’t have to do the entire closet system in one exhausting day. Break it into zones — one section this weekend, another next month. Bit by bit, you keep things fresh without turning it into a huge, dreaded job.
