Generally, it’s safer to keep a spare key with a trusted person – a neighbour, family member nearby, or close friend – rather than hiding it around your property. Traditional hiding spots like under mats, in plant pots, or above the door frame are well known, and anyone looking for an easy entry will check them first.
If you absolutely must keep a key on-site, a proper lockbox with a code is better than a loose key. Even then, you should choose a discreet location and change the code periodically. But a human “safekeeper” is usually more secure. They’re not only holding the key, they’re also an extra pair of eyes who might notice if something looks wrong.
Think about your habits too. If you’re prone to locking yourself out, having a trustworthy person with a spare key is more convenient than crawling around the porch hunting for a stone that looks “different”.
