For smooth operation, sliding doors and windows should be cleaned and lightly lubricated about once or twice a year. Over time, dust, grit and tiny bits of debris collect in the tracks. This makes sliding harder, wears down rollers and can even scratch the frame.
Start by vacuuming or brushing out the track to remove dirt. Then, wipe it with a damp cloth and let it dry. For lubrication, avoid heavy, sticky oils that attract more dust. Use a silicone-based spray or a lubricant recommended for window systems. Apply sparingly – just enough to reduce friction.
If you live by the coast or in a very dusty area, you may need to do this more often. Regular care keeps the movement smooth, reduces noise and extends the life of the rollers and hardware. It’s a small, easy job that prevents the annoying “two-hand shove” many people end up using on neglected sliders.
