How often should you check for cracks in exterior walls?

Published on:

Checking exterior walls twice a year is a reasonable habit for most homes – once before harsh weather (heavy rains or winter) and once after. Walk around the building, or as much of it as you can safely see, and look for new cracks or old ones that have grown.

Not all cracks are serious. Hairline surface cracks due to paint or minor shrinkage are common. But long, widening or diagonal cracks, especially near corners, windows or foundations, can indicate movement or deeper issues. Also look for cracks that let water seep in, causing damp patches inside.

If you spot something worrying, take a photo and date it. Check again after a month or two. If it spreads or widens, it’s worth getting a professional opinion. Small repair work on external walls is easier and cheaper when caught early, before water and time make the problem bigger.
